In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “There is that speaks like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health”, and in chapter twelve and verse nineteen of Proverbs Solomon said, “the lip of truth shall be established for ever” where we read,
The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.
The verse begins, “The lip of truth shall be established for ever:” Solomon began with the words, “the lip of truth” or “the physical lip used for speaking firmness, faithfulness, sureness, reliability , stability, continuance and truthfulness” “shall be established” which means “will exist as firm, stable, set up and fixed” “for ever” or “unto perpetuity, perpetually and eternally”. Solomon shared how the physical lip employed to share faithfulness and reliability will exist for all eternity.
The verse goes on to say, “but a lying tongue is but for a moment.” Solomon continued with the words, “but a lying tongue” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover wedge in the mouth used for speaking falsehoods, wrong, vanity and deceit” “is but for a moment” which means “exists only and solely for a twinkling, a wink or a sudden instant”. Solomon said the physical “tongue” that is employed to share falsehoods and deceit only lasts for a brief amount of time.
When we think through Solomon's words in this verse, we learn how there is a difference between people who use their voices to share the “truth” and those who employ them to tell “lies”. The “truth” of God shall last eternally, but the “lies” of the ungodly shall diminish quickly. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life: no man comes unto the Father, but by me”, (See John 14:6) and anyone who desires a personal relationship with God must come through Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of the whole world. When we surrender our lives to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life, cleanse our hearts and teach us by His Holy Spirit to speak the everlasting “truth” and to never be known among those who proclaim temporary falsehoods and deceit that only last for an instant.
Next time Solomon says, “deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
