In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “the eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good”, and in chapter fifteen and verse four of Proverbs Solomon said, “a wholesome tongue is a tree of life” where we read,
A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.
The verse begins, “A wholesome tongue is a tree of life:” Solomon began with the words, “a wholesome tongue” or “a healing, curing, sound and profitable wedge in the mouth used for eating, drinking and speaking” “is a tree of life” which means “exists as a tender, stock, plank or stalk pertaining to fresh, active and lively living”. Solomon said healing and profitable speech exist as a tender stalk of active and fresh living.
The verse continues, “but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.” Solomon added the words, “but perverseness therein” or “however, notwithstanding, nonetheless and moreover within the tongue of crookedness, distortion and viciousness” “is a breach” which means “exists as a breaking, fracture, crushing, shattering or crashing” “in the spirit” or “within the disposition, vivacity, vigor and desire”. Solomon said crookedness and distortion within the “tongue” or speech exists as a breaking fracture within the disposition of a person.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how the “tongue” or speech of a person becomes either a tender stock of active living or shatters the disposition of a person because of the viciousness within it. God created our mouths for speaking, and our words reveal the contents of our hearts. (See Matthew 12:46; Luke 6:45) God knows we need to be saved from our sinful speech, and when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins, He made a way for us to receive His salvation by believing and trusting in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”. Let us commit our “spirits” to Jehovah God and His Son Jesus who are able to help us by the Holy Spirit to use our “tongues” to enjoy fresh, active and lively living.
Next time Solomon says, “a fool despises his father's instruction”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
