In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “the fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD tries the hearts”, and in chapter seventeen and verse four of Proverbs Solomon said, “a wicked doer gives heed to false lips” where we read,
A wicked doer gives heed to false lips; and a liar gives ear to a naughty tongue.
The verse begins, “A wicked doer gives heed to false lips;” Solomon began with the words, “a wicked doer” or “ a person whether male or female who commits and performs acts and deeds that are bad, displeasing, injurious and evil” “gives heed” which means “inclines, listens, pays attention and hearkens” “to false lips” or “to afflicting, unrighteous, idolatrous and vain physical lips used for speaking”. Solomon shared how a person who performs injurious and evil deeds pays attention to idolatrous physical lips used for speaking.
The verse goes on to say, “and a liar gives ear to a naughty tongue.” Solomon continued with the words, “and a liar” or “and a false, disappointing, fraudulent, wrong and vain person” “gives ear” which means “listens, hearkens and broadens out the physical ear for hearing” “to a naughty tongue” or “toward an engulfing, ruinous and destructive wedge in the mouth used for tasting and speaking”. Solomon said a person who is fraudulent and vain listens to a ruinous and destructive voice.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how a person who commits evil and injurious acts and deeds pays attention to people who speak in fraudulent and deceptive ways, and people who are false and vain hearken to ruinous and destructive words. God wants us to listen to Him, and when we realize He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins, we should humble ourselves before Him and receive Him as our “Savior and Lord”. When we do, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us to be careful to listen to people who speak truthfully and to avoid fraudulent “tongues”.
Next time Solomon says, “whoso mocks the poor reproaches his Maker”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
