In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “Children's children are the crown of old men: and the glory of children are their fathers”, and in chapter seventeen and verse seven of Proverbs Solomon said, “excellent speech becomes not a fool” where we read,
Excellent speech becomes not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.
The verse begins, “Excellent speech becomes not a fool:” Solomon began with the words, “excellent speech” or “abundant, superfluous and eloquent uttering, declaring, proclaiming and speaking” “becomes not a fool” which means “is in no way suitable, beautiful or comely to a person who is senseless, vile and impious”. Solomon shared how eloquent speaking is in no way suitable or comely to a person who is senseless and vile.
The verse continues, “much less do lying lips a prince.” Solomon added the words, “much less” or “even to a lesser degree” “do lying lips” which means “do deceptive, disappointing, false and fraudulent physical lips used for speaking” “a prince” or “a noble, magnanimous, grand and fitting ruler”. Solomon said even to a lesser degree do false and deceptive physical lips used for speaking become fitting for a noble or ruler.
When we think through Solomon's words in this verse, we see how eloquent speaking is not fitting within the life of a senseless and vile person, and fraudulent and deceptive utterances are even more disappointing when spoken by a ruler. God wants us to be wise, and when He elevates us to positions of authority, our words should never be deceptive. God knows what is best for us, and because He loves us, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for all our sins. When we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us to be wise with our speech and never fraudulent in that which we say.
Next time Solomon says, “a gift is as a precious stone”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
