Reproof Entering a Wise Man - Proverbs 17:10

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “He that covers a transgression seeks love; but he that repeats a matter separates very friends, and in chapter seventeen and verse ten of Proverbs Solomon shared about, “reproof that enters more into a wise man” where we read,

A reproof enters more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.

The verse begins, A reproof enters more into a wise man ...Solomon began with the words, “a reproof” or “a rebuke, admonishment, reprimand or chiding” “enters more into a wise man” which means “descends upon, penetrates and goes to a greater and more abundant degree into a skillful, shrewd and prudent person whether male or female” than the following. Solomon shared how correction and admonition penetrate a skillful and prudent person to a greater degree than the following.

The verse goes on to say, “,,, than an hundred stripes into a fool.” Solomon continued with the words, “than an hundred stripes” or “compared to beating, smiting and wounding one hundred times” “into a fool” which means “penetrating and descending upon a person who is a dullard, stupid, silly and arrogant”. Solomon said rebuke and admonition penetrates the skillful and prudent person to a greater degree than a dullard and simpleton receiving one hundred beatings.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how easy it is to correct and reprimand a skillful and prudent person and how difficult it is to correct a simpleton and dullard. God wants us to be “wise”, and when “rebuke” is necessary in our lives, we are to receive it willingly. God does not want us to be like a simpleton who resists reprimand, and when we are stubborn and arrogant, even “one hundred beatings” will not change our ways. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins and rebellion of all mankind, and when we humble ourselves and receive Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us to be prudent to receive “rebuke” whenever we have need.

Next time Solomon says, “an evil man seeks only rebellion”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
