In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones”, and in chapter sixteen and verse twenty-five of Proverbs Solomon said, “there is a way that seems right unto a man” where we read,
There is a way that seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
The verse begins, “There is a way that seems right unto a man, ...” Solomon began with the words, “there is a way” or “there exists a path, journey, traveled road, habit, course of life and manner” “that seems right” which means “that has the presence, surface and face of being straight, upright, correct, fitting and proper” “unto a man” or “to a person whether male or female”. Solomon shared how there exists a course of life that has the appearance of being correct and fitting to a person.
The verse goes on to say, “... but the end thereof are the ways of death.” Solomon continued with the words, “but the end thereof” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the after part, latter time or future and hinder-most portion” “are the ways of death” which means “exists as the path, journey, traveled road, habit, course of life and manner belonging to pestilence, ruin and dying”. Solomon said although the path and journey of a person appears to be correct, the after part and future of that path and journey leads a person to ruin and “death”.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how there exists a course of life that appears to be the correct one, however, the completion of that path leads to ruin and destruction. This is the second time Solomon wrote this verse, and any time there is a repeating of a verse in the Bible we should pay particularly close attention. (See Proverbs 14:12) Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life, and no man comes to the Father, but by me” (See John 14:6), and although other paths to God may “seem” to be correct because they do not have immediate consequences, according to Jesus there is only one path to have a personal relationship with God. Jesus was sent into the world by His Father God to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and anyone who believes and trusts in Him as their “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and walk with the company of God's Holy Spirit to guide them to eternal life. All other paths may “seem right”, but their “end” will be destruction, ruin and eternal separation from God. (See Matthew 7:21-23; 25:41-46)
Next time Solomon says, “he that labors labors for himself”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
