Taught by the Heart of the Mouth - Proverbs 16:23

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that has it: but the instruction of fools is folly, and in chapter sixteen and verse twenty-three of Proverbs Solomon said, “the heart of the wise teaches his mouth” where we read,

The heart of the wise teaches his mouth, and adds learning to his lips.

The verse begins, The heart of the wise teaches his mouth, ...Solomon began with the words, “the heart of the wise” or “the soul, mind, will, desires, living being, conscience and seat of emotions and affections belonging to people who are shrewd, skillful and prudent” “teaches his mouth” which means “is circumspect, prudent, with understanding and insight in the person's orifice in the face used for eating, drinking and speaking”. Solomon shared how the soul and mind of the person who is skillful and shrewd is circumspect and insightful within the orifice in their face used for speaking.

The verse goes on to say, “... and adds learning to his lips.” Solomon continued with the words, “and adds learning” or “and joins, increases and augments insight, persuasiveness and doctrine” “to his lips” which means “to the wise person's physical lips used for speaking”. Solomon said the person who is “wise” in their “heart” augments insight and persuasiveness within their speech.

When we consider Solomon's words in this verse, we learn how the soul and mind of people who are skillful and shrewd is revealed through their “mouths”, and they continue to be instructed in the speeches they make. In other words, people who are prudent not only give instruction to others, but they continue adding doctrine to themselves. Jesus said, “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (See Matthew 12:34), and God will give us wise hearts when we have a personal intimate relationship with Him through His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross for our sins. When we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us through His Holy Spirit how to use wisdom and doctrine from our hearts and through our mouths and lips to teach others while we continue to learn from Him.

Next time Solomon says, “pleasant words are as an honeycomb”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
