Loving Transgression and Loving Strife - Proverbs 17:19

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “A man void of understanding strikes hands, and becomes surety in the presence of his friend”, and in chapter seventeen and verse nineteen of Proverbs Solomon says, “he loves transgression that loves strife” where we read,

He loves transgression that loves strife: and he that exalts his gate seeks destruction.

The verse begins, He loves transgression that loves strife:Solomon began with the words, “he loves transgression” or “the person whether male or female has affection, appetite and passion for rebellion, sin and trespass” “that loves strife” which means “who has affection, appetite and passion for contention, debate and quarreling”. Solomon said the person who is affectionate for rebellion and sin also has an appetite for quarreling and debate.

The verse continues, and he that exalts his gate seeks destruction.” Solomon added the words, “and he that exalts his gate” or “and the person whether male or female who sets on high, makes lofty and raises upward the person's opening, doorway and entrance” “seeks destruction” which means “looks for, requires, desires and requests breaking, fracture, crushing, shattering and ruin”. Solomon said the person who builds up a high doorway or entrance invites fracture and ruin.

When we think through Solomon's words in this verse, we discover that the repercussions for having a passion for rebellion and sin and making lofty boasts about a fortified entrance. Contention and ruin are the results of such behavior, and God desires that none of us experience these consequences. God wants us to put our faith and trust in Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to despise rebellion and sin as we “exalt” Him and His ability to save.

Next time Solomon says, “he that has a froward heart finds no good”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
