A Friend Loves at All Times - Proverbs 17:17

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he has no heart to it?”, and in chapter seventeen and verse seventeen of Proverbs Solomon says, “a friend loves at all times” where we read,

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

The verse begins, “A friend loves at all times, ...Solomon began with the words, “a friend” or “an intimate companion, fellow, associate or neighbor” “loves at all times” which means “has affection always, in every experience, continually and in each season”. Solomon shared how a close companion has intimate affection continually.

The verse continues, “... and a brother is born for adversity.” Solomon added the words, “and a brother” or “and a male sibling from the same relative, kinship and tribe” “is born” which means “is begotten and brought forth” “for adversity” or “on behalf of distress, affliction, anguish and tribulation”. Solomon said a male sibling is begotten on behalf of affliction and anguish.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how intimate companions are continually affectionate, and male siblings were begotten for times of affliction and distress. God wants us to “love one another”, (See John 13:34, 15:12, 17; Romans 13:8) and He demonstrated His love toward us when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins. (See Romans 5:8) When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us the ability through His Holy Spirit to “love” in every circumstance and to be available for kinsmen when affliction enters their lives.

Next time Solomon says, “a man void of understanding strikes hands”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
