Begetting a Fool - Proverbs 17:21

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “he that has a froward heart finds no good: and he that has a perverse tongue falls into mischief”, and in chapter seventeen and verse twenty-one of Proverbs Solomon said, “he that begets a fool does it to his sorrow” where we read,

He that begets a fool does it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool has no joy.

The verse begins, He that begets a fool does it to his sorrow:Solomon began with the words, “he that begets a fool” or “the person whether male or female who brings forth, engenders and births a person who is a stupid fellow, dullard, simpleton and arrogant one” “does it to his sorrow” which means “engenders and births the fool toward the person's own grief, heaviness and sorrow”. Solomon said the person who births a stupid fellow and simpleton engenders them to their own grief and heaviness.

The verse continues, “and the father of a fool has no joy.” Solomon added the words, “and the father of a fool” or “and the immediate male progenitor and ancestor belonging to a stupid fellow, dullard, simpleton and arrogant one” “has no joy” which means “holds, owns and possesses not any gladness, rejoicing or cheer”. Solomon said the male progenitor of a person who is a stupid fellow possesses no gladness or cheer at all.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon the pain and grief that is associated with having a dullard and simpleton child. God is familiar with our pain as He contends with people who refuse and reject Him and His ways every day. God wants to have a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins, and when we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us to endure any grief we may experience because of a foolish child.

Next time Solomon says, “a merry heart does good like a medicine”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
