In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “the thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD: but the words of the pure are pleasant words”, and in chapter fifteen and verse twenty-seven of Proverbs Solomon shared about, “he that is greedy of gain” where we read,
He that is greedy of gain troubles his own house; but he that hates gifts shall live.
The verse begins, “He that is greedy of gain troubles his own house;” Solomon began with the words, “he that is greedy of gain” or “the person whether male or female who exists as violently covetous pertaining to profit, plunder and unjust lucre” “troubles his own house” which means “stirs up, disturbs and afflicts his, the person's, own personal dwelling place, habitation and abode”. Solomon said the person who is violently covetous stirs up difficulties and afflictions within their home.
The verse continues, “but he that hates gifts shall live.” Solomon added the words, “but he that hates gifts” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the person whether male or female who is odious and as a foe and enemy to sacrificial offerings or bribes” “shall live” which means “will remain alive, sustain life, be quickened and healthy”. Solomon said the person who exists as a foe and enemy to bribes will be quickened and enjoy a sustained life.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how people who are extremely covetous bring affliction and difficulties into their homes, however, when a person detests offerings and bribes, they shall have a healthy and sustained life. God loves us, and He wants us to understand that covetousness is not only against His tenth commandment, but it will bring affliction and difficulties into our lives. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us to be “content” with what we have and keep away from bribery. (See Hebrews 13:5)
Next time Solomon says, “the heart of the righteous studies to answer”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
