A Wise Son or Foolish Man - Proverbs 15:20

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “The way of the slothful man is as an hedge of thorns: but the way of the righteous is made plain”, and in chapter fifteen and verse twenty of Proverbs Solomon said, “a wise son makes a glad father” where we read,

A wise son makes a glad father: but a foolish man despises his mother.

The verse begins, “A wise son makes a glad father:” Solomon began with the words, “a wise son” or “a shrewd, skillful and prudent male offspring and prodigy” “makes a glad father” which means “causes an immediate male progenitor and ancestor to rejoice, be gladdened and brighten up”. Solomon shared how a male offspring who is skillful and prudent causes his “father” to rejoice and be glad.

The verse goes on to say, “but a foolish man despises his mother.” Solomon continued with the words, “but a foolish man” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover a stupid, dullard, simpleton and arrogant person whether male or female” “despises his mother” which means “disdains, holds in contempt and thinks to scorn his, the stupid person's, immediate female progenitor and ancestor”. Solomon said the person who is a dullard and simpleton holds their “mother” in contempt and disdains her.

When we meditate upon Solomon's words in this verse, we see how there is a difference between a “wise” son and a “foolish” child. Each of them affect their parents even as the skillful son causes his “father” to rejoice, and the stupid and arrogant person actually disdains his mother and holds her in contempt. God gave us our parents, and they, like we, are or were imperfect. “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (See Romans 3:23), and “there is none righteous, no, not one”. (See Romans 3:10) “God so loved the world that He gave His Only Begotten Son, (Jesus), that whosoever believes in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life”. (See John 3:16) When we put our faith and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to be “wise” before our “fathers” and never be “foolish” before our “mothers”.

Next time Solomon says, “folly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
