In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “in the light of the king's countenance is life; and his favor is as a cloud of the latter rain”, and in chapter sixteen and verse sixteen of Proverbs Solomon said, “how much better is it to get wisdom than gold” where we read,
How much better is it to get wisdom than gold!
and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!
The verse begins, “How much better is it to get wisdom than gold!” Solomon began with the words, “how much better is it” or “to what greater degree, goodness, prosperity, preciousness and favor exists” “to get wisdom” which means “to acquire, obtain and possess skill, shrewdness and prudence” “than gold” or “compared to valuable gold metal”! Solomon said it is more favorable to gain skill and prudence than precious gold metal.
The verse continues, “and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!” Solomon added the words, “and to get understanding” or “and to acquire, obtain and possess discernment and knowledge” “rather to be chosen than silver” which means “preferable to being elected, decided upon and selected compared to valuable silver metal”. Solomon said obtaining knowledge and discernment is preferable to gaining silver metal.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon the value of “wisdom” and “understanding”. He said these exceeded the worth of “gold and silver”. God wants the best for us, and because He loves us, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His “skill, prudence, knowledge and discernment” to manage our lives according to His purposes and plans. The Bible shows us God's ways of wisdom, and those who read and take heed to them shall be of great worth in the world.
Next time Solomon says, “the highway of the upright is to depart from evil”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
