The Joy of the Destitute of Wisdom - Proverbs 15:21

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “A wise son makes a glad father: but a foolish man despises his mother”, and in chapter fifteen and verse twenty-one of Proverbs Solomon said, “folly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom” where we read,

Folly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom: but a man of understanding walks uprightly.

The verse begins, “Folly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom:” Solomon began with the words, “folly is joy” or “silliness and foolishness exists as mirth, gladness, gaiety, pleasure and a happy issue” “to him that is destitute of wisdom” which means “to the person whether male or female who exists as lacking, needy and in want pertaining to skill, shrewdness and prudence”. Solomon shared how people who act in silly and foolish ways consider it pleasurable and gaiety to do so.

The verse continues, “but a man of understanding walks uprightly.” Solomon added the words, “but a man of understanding” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the person whether male or female who possesses intelligence, skill, insight and knowledge” “walks uprightly” which means “ambles about and makes their way in a straight, level, agreeable, right and pleasing manner”. Solomon said a person who possesses intelligence and insight makes their way in a straight, right and agreeable way.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how there is a difference between the person who is “destitute of wisdom” and the person who is “of understanding”. The person who rejoices in their foolishness and silliness exhibit their lack of skill and prudence, and the person who makes their way in a straight and right manner reveals the insight and intelligence that is within them. God gives us the ability to become intelligent and skillful, and when we yield to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us to be people of “understanding” so we may live in a pleasing manner before Him.

Next time Solomon says, “without counsel purposes are disappointed”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
