The Understanding Heart - Proverbs 15:14

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “a merry heart makes a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken”, and in chapter fifteen and verse fourteen of Proverbs Solomon said, “the heart of him that has understanding seeks knowledge” where we read,

The heart of him that has understanding seeks knowledge:

but the mouth of fools feeds on foolishness.

The verse begins, “The heart of him that has understanding seeks knowledge:” Solomon began with the words, “the heart of him” or “the soul, mind, will, desires, conscience, living being and seat of emotions and affections belonging the person whether male or female” “that has understanding” which means “who holds, owns and possesses discernment, consideration, insight and intelligence” “seeks knowledge” or “ desires, requests and searches for perception, skill and wisdom”. Solomon shared how the soul, mind and will of the person who possesses discernment and insight searches for perception and skill.

The verse goes on to say, “but the mouth of fools feeds on foolishness.” Solomon continued with the words, “but the mouth of fools” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the orifice in the face used for eating, drinking and speaking belonging to people who are unwise, stupid, dullard, simpletons and arrogant” “feeds on foolishness” which means “tends, grazes and pastures upon silliness and folly”. Solomon said the person who is an arrogant simpleton and dullard uses their “mouth” to nourish themselves with silliness and folly.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how there is a contrast between the person whose soul and mind possesses discernment and search for skill and wisdom and the person who is unwise employing their “mouth” to devour silliness and folly. God wants us to be wise, and when we yield our lives to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins, we make the wisest decision available to mankind. When we surrender to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us a desire to search for His insight and intelligence to be used in this life and the life to come.

Next time Solomon says, “all the days of the afflicted are evil”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
