A Bear Robbed of Her Whelps - Proverbs 17:12

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “An evil man seeks only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him, and in chapter seventeen and verse twelve of Proverbs Solomon said, “let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man” where we read,

Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.

The verse begins, Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, ...Solomon began with the words, “let a bear” or “allow and permit a she-bear” “robbed of her whelps” which means “bereaved pertaining to her cubs and offspring” “meet a man” or “encounter a person whether male or female” compared to the following. Solomon considered the idea of a she-bear being bereaved of her cubs encountering a person compared to the following.

The verse goes on to say, “... rather than a fool in his folly.” Solomon continued with the words, “rather than a fool” or “compared to a stupid, dullard, simpleton and arrogant person whether male or female” “in his folly” which means “within their silliness and foolishness”. Solomon said it is better to encounter a she-bear that is bereaved of her cubs compared to meeting a stupid and arrogant person in their foolishness.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how horrific it is to meet a person who is arrogant and foolish. We would be better off encountering a she-bear that has her cubs stolen from her than having a skirmish with a boastful and stupid person. God wants us to be wise, and He provides His wisdom to every person who receives His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind as their personal “Savior and Lord”. When we surrender to Jesus, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and cause us to avoid the “foolish person” and continually seek Him for wisdom and understanding in everything we do. (See James 1:5)

Next time Solomon shares about, “whoso rewards evil for good”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
