Merry Heart – Cheerful Countenance - Proverbs 15:13

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “A scorner loves not one that reproves him: neither will he go unto the wise”, and in chapter fifteen and verse thirteen of Proverbs Solomon said, “a merry heart makes a cheerful countenance” where we read,

A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.

The verse begins, “A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance:” Solomon began with the words, “a merry heart” or “a joyful, rejoicing and glad inner man, soul, mind, inclination and determination of will” “makes a cheerful countenance” which means “produces a glad, well pleasing and beautiful face, forefront and presence”. Solomon said a joyful inner man and mind causes the face of a person to be beautiful and glad.

The verse continues, “but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.” Solomon added the words, “but by sorrow” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover through the means of pain, hurt, injury and a wound” “of the heart” which means “pertaining to the inner man, soul, mind, inclination and determination of will” “the spirit is broken” or “the mind, breath, animation, vivacity, vigor and courage of a person exists as stricken, smitten, afflicted and wounded”. Solomon said pain, hurt and injury to the soul and mind causes the vivacity, vigor and courage of a person to be stricken and afflicted.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon the value of having a joyful and glad soul. It shows on our faces when we rejoice within, however, when pain and injury has come into our souls, our courage and vivacity for living can become afflicted. God wants to give us His joy, and when we receive His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and produce within us the “fruit” of His “Spirit” whereby our faces will reflect to others our rejoicing and merriment in our relationship with Him. (See Galatians 5:22)

Next time Solomon says, “the heart of him that has understanding seeks knowledge”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
