A Merry Heart Medicine - Proverbs 17:22

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “he that begets a fool does it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool has no joy”, and in chapter seventeen and verse twenty-two of Proverbs Solomon said, “a merry heart does good like a medicine” where we read,

A merry heart does good like a medicine: but a broken spirit dries the bones.

The verse begins, “a merry heart does good like a medicine:Solomon began with the words, “a merry heart” or “a joyful and glad soul, mind, will, desire, living being, conscience and seat of emotions and affections” “does good like a medicine” which means “is pleasing, well placed and right similar and in likeness to a cure, healing of a wound and removal of a bandage”. Solomon said a joyful soul is well placed similar to a curing agent used for a wound.

The verse goes on to say, “but a broken spirit dries the bones.” Solomon continued with the words, “but a broken spirit” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover a stricken, afflicted and wounded mind, vigor, courage and temperament” “dries the bones” which means “withers, makes ashamed and disappoints the strength and self”. Solomon said a crushed and afflicted mind and vigor withers the substance and strength of a person.

When we think through the words in this verse, we discover through Solomon how important it is to have a joyful soul. Being “merry” has “medicinal” benefits that affects us within our souls, and when our temperament is crushed, so will be our substance and living. God alone is able to satisfy the soul, and when we yield our lives to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put the joy of His Holy Spirit within our “spirits” to bring a cure to whatever troubles us.

Next time Solomon says, “a wicked man takes a gift”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
