Covering a Transgression Seeking Love - Proverbs 17:9

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that has it: whithersoever it turns, it prospers, and in chapter seventeen and verse nine of Proverbs Solomon said, “he that covers a transgression seeks love” where we read,

He that covers a transgression seeks love; but he that repeats a matter separates very friends.

The verse begins, He that covers a transgression seeks love;Solomon began with the words, “he that covers a transgression” or “the person whether male or female who conceals and hides a rebellion, revolt, trespass or sin” “seeks love” which means “desires, requires, exacts and requests intimate affection”. Solomon shared how the person who conceals a trespass or sin desires intimate affection.

The verse continues, “but he that repeats a matter separates very friends .” Solomon added the words, “but he that repeats a matter” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the person whether male or female who transmutes, strikes and returns to do a speech, utterance and act again” “separates very friends” which means “divides, parts, scatters and severs intimate, chief and close companions”. Solomon said a person who commit a speech or deed another time severs close and intimate companions, associates, partners and consorts.

When we meditate upon Solomon's words in this verse, we discover the reason why people conceal and hide their trespasses and sins. They want affectionate love, however, when they perform those acts, deeds or speeches another time, they sever the close companionships they have with others. God wants us to be righteous and remain separated from sinful behavior and words, and when we fail, we are to humble ourselves, be honest about our sins, repent from them, and ask Him for forgiveness. God knew we would trespass, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross to pay the penalty of death for those wrongs. (See John 3:16; Romans 3:23, 6:23) When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us how to keep away from “transgressions” and not to “repeat” them when we fail.

Next time Solomon shares about, “reproof that enters more into a wise man”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
