A Dinner of Herbs - Proverbs 15:17

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble therewith”, and in chapter fifteen and verse seventeen of Proverbs Solomon said, “better is a dinner of herbs where love is” where we read,

Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.

The verse begins, “Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, ...” Solomon began with the words, “better is a dinner of herbs” or “good, pleasant, agreeable and excellent exists a meal, allowance, diet and ration containing vegetables and garden greens” “where love is” which means “in the place and location that absolute affection and desire exists”. Solomon shared how a meal with vegetables and garden greens is more pleasant in the location that affection and desire exists than the following.

The verse continues, “... than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.” Solomon added the words, “than a stalled ox” or “compared to a fattened and fed oxen or head of cattle” “and hatred therewith” which means “and exceeding and emphatic hate within”. Solomon said a meal of vegetables in a location that affection exists is exceedingly better than a fattened cattle in the place where hate exists.

When we meditate upon in this verse, we discover through Solomon the difference between a home that is filled with love and one that is filled with hate. Having a meal with vegetables with “love” in the home is greater than having a meal with a fattened oxen where “hatred” exists. God wants us to know He loves us, and His desire is to have a personal intimate relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins to prove it. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and fill our homes with His “love” so whatever we have for a meal is better than the most valuable meal where “hatred” exists.

Next time Solomon says, “a wrathful man stirs up strife”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
