In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “correction is grievous unto him that forsakes the way: and he that hates reproof shall die”, and in chapter fifteen and verse eleven of Proverbs Solomon said, “hell and destruction are before the LORD” where we read,
Hell and destruction are before the LORD: how much more then the hearts of the children of men?
The verse begins, “Hell and destruction are before the LORD:” Solomon began with the words, “hell and destruction” or “sheol, the underworld, the grave, the pit and ruin, Hades, perishing and Abaddon” “are before the LORD” which means “exist in front, in the presence and view of Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”. Solomon shared how the underworld, the grave and the place of ruin exist in the presence of Jehovah God.
The verse continues, “how much more then the hearts of the children of men?” Solomon asked, “how much more than” or “to what greater and more abundant way” “the hearts” which means “the souls, minds, wills, desires, living being, conscience and seat of emotions and affections” “of the children of men” or “belonging to the offspring and progeny of people both male and female”? Solomon asked to what greater degree Jehovah God observed the souls, minds and wills of the offspring of people.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how the grave, ruin and perishing exist within the presence of Jehovah God, and since this is true, Solomon questioned to what greater degree the minds and wills of people are before Him. God knows us, sees us and is aware of every right and wrong we have done, are doing and will do. Because we make errors and commit wrongs, we have sinned, and “the wages of sin is death”. (See Romans 6:23) He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and rescue us from the penalty for sin which is “hell and destruction” which exist before Him.
Next time Solomon says, “a scorner loves not one that reproves him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
