The Tongue of the Wise - Proverbs 15:2

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “a soft answer turns away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger”, and in chapter fifteen and verse two of Proverbs Solomon said, “the tongue of the wise uses knowledge aright” where we read,

The tongue of the wise uses knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools pours out foolishness.

The verse begins, “The tongue of the wise uses knowledge aright:” Solomon began with the words, “the tongue” or “the wedge in the mouth used for eating, drinking and speaking” “of the wise” which means “belonging to people who are skillful, shrewd and prudent” “uses knowledge aright” or “employs intelligence, insight, perception, discernment and wisdom in a good, pleasing and well placed manner”. Solomon said skillful and prudent people speak intelligently with wisdom in a good and pleasant way.

The verse continues, “but the mouth of fools pours out foolishness.” Solomon added the words, “but the mouth of fools” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the orifice in the face used for eating, drinking and speaking belonging to people who are stupid, dullards, simpletons and silly” “pours out foolishness” which means “gushes forth, bubbles up and emits silliness and folly”. Solomon said people who are dullards and simpletons speak with silly and folly-filled words.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how people who are skillful and shrewd use their voices in a good and pleasing way. However, people who are simpletons emit silliness and foolish talk. God wants us to use the voices He gave us in a “wise” manner, and because He knows we have a tendency to do the opposite, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins, even the vocal sins, of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us by His Holy Spirit to share our insight and intelligence with wisdom.

Next time Solomon says, “the eyes of the LORD are in every place”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
