Punishing the Just - Proverbs 17:26

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “a foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him”, and in chapter seventeen and verse twenty-six of Proverbs Solomon said, “to punish the just is not good” where we read,

Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.

The verse begins, “Also to punish the just is not good, ...Solomon began with the words, “also to punish the just” or “even so and indeed to fine, amerce and condemn people who are lawful, righteous, and correct” “is not good” which means “exists as not pleasant, agreeable, rich or valuable”. Solomon shared how condemning people who are lawful and correct is of no value or pleasantness.

The verse goes on to say, “... nor to strike princes for equity.” Solomon continued with the words, “nor to strike princes” or “no and not in any way to smite, hit, beat, scourge or slay nobles or royal rulers” “for equity” which means “for being honest, straight, even and upright”. Solomon said beating and smiting a royal ruler who does what is right is not agreeable or pleasant.

When we consider Solomon's words in this verse, we discover how making people pay a penalty for being righteous and smiting ruling authorities for making fair and right judgments “is not good”. God's Son Jesus knew the effects of people judging Him unfairly when He suffered and died on the cross for the sins of the whole world. Because He suffered, we may be saved and forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and cared for when others make us pay a penalty for doing what is right. God wants us to have a personal relationship with Him through Jesus, and He will relate to us and be present should we be “punished” for doing what is good or “stricken” when we are fair.

Next time Solomon says, “he that has knowledge spares his words”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
