In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “It is an honor for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling”, and in chapter twenty and verse four of Proverbs Solomon said, “the sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold” where we read,
The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold;
therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.
The verse begins, “The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold;” Solomon began with the words, “the sluggard” or “the lazy, indolent, slothful and lax person” “will not plow” which means “shall in no way or manner cut in, engrave and turn over the ground” “by reason of the cold” or “for the cause pertaining to the harvest time, autumn or winter season”. Solomon shared how the lazy person will not till or turn over their ground by using the excuse that it is the winter season.
The verse continues, “therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.” Solomon added the words, “therefore shall he beg” or “wherefore, then and on this account will he, the sluggard, inquire, borrow, ask and practice beggary” “in harvest” which means “within the reaping of the crop, limbs or foliage”, “and have nothing” or “and hold, own and possess not one thing”. Solomon said the person who is a “sluggard” will not “plow” because it is winter time, and this causes him to practice beggary within the “harvest time” and shall possess not one thing.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how people who are lazy do not “plow” their fields, so they have nothing to “reap” when the “harvest” time arrives. This causes them to “beg”, and God never intended this to be our way. God gives every person a purpose and plan for their lives, and everyone of us align with God when we receive His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins as our personal “Savior and Lord”. Paul the apostle wrote, “this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat” (See 2 Thessalonians 3:10), and we should never want to be as those who are “lazy and do not plow” so we will possess an ample supply when the “harvest” comes.
Next time Solomon says, “counsel in the heart of man is like deep water”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
