In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise”, and in chapter twenty and verse two of Proverbs Solomon said, “the fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion” where we read,
The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion:
whoso provokes him to anger sins against his own soul.
The verse begins, “The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion:” Solomon began with the words, “the fear of a king” or “the awe, reverence, respect, terror and dread belonging to a royal ruler and leader” “is as the roaring” which means “exists similar and in likeness to the growling wrath and snarl” “of a lion” or “belonging to the young lion as covered with a mane”. Solomon shared how awe and reverence belonging to the royal exists like the growling snarl of a young lion.
The verse continues, “whoso provokes him to anger sins against his own soul.” Solomon added the words, “whoso provokes him to anger” or “whatever person whether male or female rouses, overflows and causes the royal ruler toward wrath that wrinkles the nostrils and nose” “sins against his own soul” which means “misses the mark, errs, makes a mistake and trespasses the person's own personal heart, mind, will, desires, living being, conscience and seat of emotions and passions”. Solomon said whatever person rouses the royal ruler to violent wrath errs within their own heart, mind and will.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how awe and respect for the royal ruler and leader exists like the growling snarl of a young lion, and should someone cause the “king” to become filled with wrath, they would err and trespass against their own heart, mind and will. God Himself raises up leaders and He tears them down, (See Daniel 2:21) and He wants us to have respect to them and the office they hold. God is the King of authority, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we have faith and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us how to have awe of those in authority especially when God has put them in their position.
Next time Solomon says, “it is an honor for a man to cease from strife”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
