In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “the man that wanders out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse seventeen of Proverbs Solomon said, “he that loves pleasure shall be a poor man” where we read,
He that loves pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loves wine and oil shall not be rich.
The verse begins, “He that loves pleasure shall be a poor man:” Solomon began with the words, “he that loves pleasure” or “the person whether male or female who has strong affection for joy, mirth, gladness, gaiety and happiness” “shall be a poor man” which means “will exist as a person whether male or female who is impoverished, in need, want and destitute”. Solomon shared how the person who has a strong affection for happiness and gladness will exist as a person who is destitute and impoverished.
The verse goes on to say, “he that loves wine and oil shall not be rich.” Solomon continued with the words, “he that loves wine” or “the person whether male or female who has a strong affection for effervescent, intoxicating and fermented fruit of the vine” “and oil” which means “and medicament, unguent or anointing olive oil” “shall not be rich” or “will in no way or manner exist as wealthy and enriched”. Solomon said the person who has a strong affection for intoxicating fruit of the vine and anointing oil will in no way exist as wealthy.
When we consider Solomon's words in this verse, we learn how having a strong affection toward “pleasure, wine and excessive oil” will lead a person to being destitute. The idea is that we are not to desire accouterments and belongings that are destructive. God loves us, and His plan is to save us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to have affection for the things of God and not the temporary material things of the world.
Next time Solomon says, “the wicked shall be a ransom for the righteous”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
