A Talebearer Revealing Secrets - Proverbs 20:19

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war”, and in chapter twenty and verse nineteen of Proverbs Solomon said, “he that goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets” where we read,

He that goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets:

therefore meddle not with him that flatters with his lips.

The verse begins, He that goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets:” Solomon began with the words, “he that goes about” or “the person whether male or female who proceeds, walks about and lives” “as a talebearer” which means “similar and in likeness to a slanderer, informant and scandal-monger” “reveals secrets” or “uncovers, removes, discovers and discloses intimate, crafty and clandestine thoughts and ideas”. Solomon shared how the person who lives like a slander-monger exposes clandestine thoughts and ideas which are intended not to be known.

The verse goes on to say, “therefore meddle not with him that flatters with his lips.” Solomon continued with the words, “therefore meddle not” or “then, wherefore and on this account do not engage, become surety and pledge” “with him that flatters” which means “alongside the person whether male or female who opens wide and spacious their speech filled with deception, persuasion and delusion” “with his lips” or “by the use of the person's physical lips used for speaking”. Solomon instructed his readers and listeners not to engage with people who use their physical lips to deceive and persuade others in nefarious ways.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see through Solomon how there are people who exist only to be gadabouts and busybodies. They live to expose clandestine thoughts, plans and ideas, and we are exhorted through Solomon not to engage with people who are like this. This behavior is sin, and because God knew “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (See Romans 3:23), He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we surrender our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and make us wise enough to know who the “talebearers” are and to distance ourselves from them whenever we have the opportunity to do so.

Next time Solomon shares about, “whoso curses his father or his mother”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
