In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse seven of Proverbs Solomon said, “the rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender” where we read,
The rich rules over the poor,
and the borrower is servant to the lender.
The verse begins, “The rich rules over the poor, ...” Solomon began with the words, “the rich” or “the wealthy and noble person” “rules over the poor” which means “reigns and has dominion above people who are impoverished, in want and in need”. Solomon shared how people who are wealthy reign above people who are impoverished.
The verse continues, “... and the borrower is servant to the lender.” Solomon added the words, “and the borrower” or “receiver or one who obligates themselves to a loan” “is servant” which means “exists as a bondman, person of servile condition and slave” “to the lender” or “toward the one who provides the loan, lends or bestows provision”. Solomon said a person who obligates themselves to someone who gives them a loan becomes a slave to them.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see through Solomon how people who have great means and wealth tend to have rule over people who are in need, and in like manner, the person who receives a loan from a “lender”becomes a slave to that “lender”. God provides all we will ever need as we yield to His Son Jesus who was sent into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we have faith and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and guide us into His wisdom through His Holy Spirit concerning “servanthood” when we are “borrowing and lending” in this world.
Next time Solomon says, “he that sows iniquity shall reap vanity”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
