A Garment of Surety - Proverbs 20:16

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “there is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel”, and in chapter twenty and verse sixteen of Proverbs Solomon said, “take his garment that is surety for a stranger” where we read,

Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

The verse begins, Take his garment that is surety for a stranger:” Solomon began with the words, “take a garment” or “fetch, lay hold of, snatch and acquire clothing and raiment” “that is surety” which means “that exists as a pledge, exchange, undertaking and share” “for a stranger” or “on behalf of a person who is foreign, an enemy or estranged”. Solomon shared how an article of clothing was to be acquired for a pledge from an unknown person whenever a loan or agreement was made.

The verse continues, “and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.” Solomon added the words, “and take a pledge of him” or “and fetch, lay hold of, snatch and acquire a security deposit from the person who is” “for a strange woman” which means “for a female human being who is an alien, foreigner, stranger, prostitute and unfamiliar person”. Solomon instructed his readers and listeners to lay hold of a security deposit from the person for a “woman” who is unknown, a foreigner or seductress.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we discover through Solomon how those who conduct business with people unknown to them should obtain clothing as a guarantee, and they should receive a deposit from a person for a woman who is a seductress. God wants us to be wise with the resources He has provided to us. When we yield to Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to obtain “pledges” of guarantees and security deposits when we do business with people who are unknown to us.

Next time Solomon says, “bread of deceit is sweet to a man”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
