In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “he that follows after righteousness and mercy finds life, righteousness, and honor”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse twenty-two of Proverbs Solomon said, “a wise man scales the city of the mighty” where we read,
A wise man scales the city of the mighty,
and casts down the strength of the confidence thereof.
The verse begins, “A wise man scales the city of the mighty, ...” Solomon began with the words, “a wise man” or “a person whether male or female who is skillful, shrewd and prudent” “scales the city” which means “ascends, climbs and goes up to the town or guarded place” “of the mighty” or “belonging to the powerful, strong and brave”. Solomon shared how a skillful person ascends to the guarded dwelling place belonging to people who are powerful and brave.
The verse continues, “... and casts down the strength of the confidence thereof.” Solomon added the words, “and casts down” or “and declines, prostrates and brings to a lower region” “the strength of the confidence thereof” which means “the power, might, security and boldness pertaining to the trust, refuge, security and assurance within the city of the mighty”. Solomon said the “wise man” brings to a lower region the power, security, assurance and trust within “the city of the mighty”.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how the skill and shrewdness of a person is able to ascend unto the dwelling place of the powerful and bring down the trust and assurance they have in the security of their “city”. Many foes have been conquered by those who were thought to be less powerful because the “lesser” used their skill and prudence to defeat them. God wants us to have the advantage of faith and trust in His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins so we may defeat our enemy, the devil, who is constantly on the attack. When we yield our lives to Jesus, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us the shrewdness, skill and wisdom to overcome the fortresses that are erected by our enemies.
Next time Solomon shares about, “whoso keeps his mouth and his tongue”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
