In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “a slothful man hides his hand in his bosom, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again”, and in chapter nineteen and verse twenty-five of Proverbs Solomon said, “smite a scorner, and the simple will beware” where we read,
Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware:
and reprove one that has understanding, and he will understand knowledge.
The verse begins, “Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware:” Solomon began with the words, “smite a scorner” or “hit, beat, slay and kill a person who talks arrogantly, boasts, scoffs and mocks”, “and the simple will beware” which means “and the naive, foolish, silly and seducible shall be subtle, shrewd, crafty and prudent”. Solomon said when a person who is an arrogant mocker is beaten and slain, people who are naive and silly shall be prudent and shrewd.
The verse continues, “and reprove one that has understanding, and he will understand knowledge.” Solomon added the words, “and reprove one that has understanding” or “and judge, correct and convince a person whether male or female who possesses discernment, insight and perception”, “and he will understand knowledge” which means “and the person shall observe, perceive and possess discernment, insight, discretion and intelligence”. Solomon said when a person who possesses discernment is corrected, they shall perceive intelligence and insight.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how discipline and correction to a person who is an arrogant mocker causes naive and foolish people to become prudent, and when a person possesses discernment is corrected, they will perceive insight and intelligence. In other words, discipline is effective to the person receiving it and others around them. God knows what is best for us, and when He corrects us, not only are we benefited, but other people are as well. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting lift and teach us the value of being “reproved” so we become pleasing in His eyes.
Next time Solomon shares about, “he that wastes his father”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
