Bread of Deceit - Proverbs 20:17

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman”, and in chapter twenty and verse seventeen of Proverbs Solomon said, “bread of deceit is sweet to a man” where we read,

Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

The verse begins, Bread of deceit is sweet to a man;” Solomon began with the words, “bread of deceit” or “food or grain pertaining to deception, disappointment, falsehood, fraud and wrong” “is sweet to a man” which means “exists as pleasant to a person whether male or female”. Solomon shared how the food or nourishment pertaining to deception and falsehood exists as pleasing and delightful to a person.

The verse goes on to say, “but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.” Solomon continued with the words, “but afterwards” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover behind and following” “his mouth shall be filled” which means “the person's orifice in the face used for eating, drinking and speaking will have abundance, fullness and be completed” “with gravel” or “with rough, grit and divided stones or rock”. Solomon said following the perceived pleasantness of being deceptive a person's “mouth” will be full of broken stones or rocks.

When we think through Solomon's words in this verse, we discover how lying and deception may seem to be pleasant and agreeable at the time they are spoken, however, following the speaking, it's as though the “mouth” of the person is full of broken stoney rocks. God wants us to be truthful, and although it may seem for a time that we take pleasure in lying and deception, there will be repercussions. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us by His Holy Spirit to speak the truth and avoid all deception.

Next time Solomon says, “every purpose is established by counsel”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
