Divers Weights an Abomination - Proverbs 20:23

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “Say not you, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save you”, and in chapter twenty and verse twenty-three of Proverbs Solomon said, “divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD” where we read,

Divers Weights are an abomination unto the LORD;

and a false balance is not good.

The verse begins, Divers Weights are an abomination unto the LORD;” Solomon began with the words, “divers weights” or “stones used for measuring with varying and perverse amounts” “are an abomination” which means “exist as disgusting, wicked and unclean” “unto the LORD” or “to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name of the One True God”. Solomon shared how units of measurement with varying wicked amounts exist as disgusting and unclean to Jehovah God.

The verse goes on to say, “and a false balance is not good.” Solomon continued with the words, “and a false balance” or “and a treacherous, feigned and subtle pair of scales” “is not good” which means “does not exists as pleasant or agreeable”. Solomon said a feigned and treacherous scale for measuring is not pleasant or agreeable as well.

When we think through the words in this verse, we notice how Solomon referred to unjust and unrighteous measurements employed for making transactions. God is holy, and we are to be holy. (See 1 Peter 1:15-16) We are not to use disgusting means to take advantage of people, and if we do, we sin not only against them, but against God Himself. God knew people sinned, (See Romans 3:10, 23), and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us by His Holy Spirit to be honest and just in our means of measurement so we will not be disgusting to Him.

Next time Solomon says, “man's goings are of the LORD”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
