The Snare of Devouring the Holy - Proverbs 20:25

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “Man's goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?”, and in chapter twenty and verse twenty-five of Proverbs Solomon declared, “it is a snare to the man who devours that which is holy” where we read,

It is a snare to the man who devours that which is holy,

and after vows to make inquiry.

The verse begins, It is a snare to the man who devours that which is holy,” Solomon began with the words, “it is a snare” or “it exists as a gin, trap, bait or lure” “to the man” which means “to the person whether male or female” “who devours” or “who swallows down, speaks rashly and talks wildly concerning” “that which is holy” which means “things which are sacred, set apart, dedicated, hallowed and consecrated”. Solomon shared how speaking rashly and wildly concerning things that are sacred is a consuming trap to the people who speak them.

The verse goes on to say, “and after vows to make inquiry.” Solomon continued with the words, “and after vows” or “and following behind and to the hinder part makes a votive offering” “to make inquiry” which means “to seek, consider, look for, reflect, inspect and search”. Solomon said following speaking against that which is “holy” the person makes a promise to reconsider and reflect upon what they have rashly spoken.

When we meditate upon Solomon's words in this verse, we discover that it is a trap for a person to speak rashly concerning things that are sacred, and many people only later think about questioning what they have said. God wants us to be “holy as He is holy” (See 1 Peter 1:15-16), and this is only possible when we humble ourselves, repent of our sins and believe and trust in God's Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins. When we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us through His Holy Spirit to consider our words in advance especially when we are making statements about sacred things.

Next time Solomon says, “a wise king scatters the wicked”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
