Living with a Brawling Woman - Proverbs 21:9

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “the way of man is froward and strange: but as for the pure, his work is right”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse nine of Proverbs Solomon said, “it is better to dwell in a corner of a housetop, than with a brawling woman” where we read,

It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house.

The verse begins, It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, ... Solomon began with the words, “it is better” or “it exists as more pleasant, agreeable, excellent and valuable” “to dwell in a corner” which means “to live, abide, remain and stay within a bulwark, tower, pinnacle or chieftain” “of a housetop” or “belonging to a roof or top of a house” than the following. Solomon said it was better to live within the chieftain or bulwark in the pinnacle of a roof or housetop than the following.

The verse goes on to say, “than with a brawling woman in a wide house.” Solomon continued with the words, “than with a brawling woman” or “compared to living with a striving, contentious and quarrelsome female human being” “in a wide house” which means “within the shelter, dwelling place and habitation of an association, company, band or enchantment”. Solomon said living in the corner of a housetop is better than living with a contentious and quarrelsome woman in a large dwelling place.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how difficult it can be for a person who lives with quarrelsome and contentious female. Solomon said it was “better” to live in a small corner spot on the top of a roof than to live with a “brawling woman” in a huge house that has plenty of room. God wants us to live in a manner that is pleasing to Him, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us the value of not being contentious and how to live with people who act in that way.

Next time Solomon says, “the soul of the wicked desires evil”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
