Cursing Father and Mother - Proverbs 20:20

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “he that goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flatters with his lips”, and in chapter twenty and verse twenty of Proverbs Solomon shared about, “whoso curses his father or his mother” where we read,

Whoso curses his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.

The verse begins, Whoso curses his father or his mother, ...” Solomon began with the words, “whoso curses his father or “whatever person whether male or female who slights, abates and trifles with their immediate male progenitor and ancestor” “or his mother” which means “or the person's immediate female progenitor and ancestor” shall experience the following. Solomon said whatever person trifles with or abates their immediate male and female progenitors will experience the following.

The verse continues, “... his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.” Solomon added the words, “his lamp” or “the person's glistening or burning candle” “shall be put out” which means “will be extinguished and quenched” “in obscure darkness” or “within the incomprehensible and concealed deepest blackness”. Solomon said the glistening candle of the person who “curses their father and mother” will be extinguished within the deepest blackness.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon that there are extreme consequences for anyone who abates and trifles with their immediate male and female progenitors. God said, “Honor your father and your mother: that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God gives you” (See Exodus 20:12), and when a person disobeys His law, they will suffer for it. God wants to have a loving personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us the value of honoring our parents so we will be blessed all our lives for doing so.

Next time Solomon says, “an inheritance may be gotten hastily”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
