In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “thorns and snares are in the way of the froward: he that does keep his soul shall be far from him”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse six of Proverbs Solomon said, “train up a child in the way he should go” where we read,
Train up a child in the way he should go:
and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
The verse begins, “Train up a child in the way he should go:” Solomon began with the words, “train up a child” or “dedicate, initiate and inaugurate discipline with a lad, boy, girl or youth” “in the way” which means “within the traveled road, journey, direction, habit, manner and course of life” “he should go” or “the child whether male or female is to travel or make their way”. Solomon said discipline should be administered to a lad or youth as to the manner and path they are to make their way in life.
The verse goes on to say, “and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Solomon continued with the words, “and when he is old” or “and at the time and moment the child becomes aged”, “he will not depart from it” which means “the child will in no way or manner leave, be removed from or avoid the way they should go”. Solomon said at the time and moment the child becomes aged, they will in no way leave or be removed from the discipline they received.
When we consider the words in this verse, we discover through Solomon how children are to be disciplined and directed by their parents and the authorities who govern over them. Every “child” has their particular gifts and abilities, and when godly disciplines are given, children will manifest them in ways that are pleasing to God and beneficial to others. The promise within this verse is that a “child” who is disciplined will not avoid or leave their training when they age, and because God loves us, He offers us His eternal salvation through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He not only will discipline us in His ways, but also help us to give His direction and discipline to the children and youths that He places within our lives.
Next time Solomon says, “the rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
