Coveting Greedily All Day Long - Proverbs 21:26

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “the desire of the slothful kills him, for his hands refuse to labor, and in chapter twenty-one and verse twenty-six of Proverbs Solomon said, “he covets greedily all the day long” where we read,

He covets greedily all the day long: but the righteous gives and spares not.

The verse begins, He covets greedily all the day long: Solomon began with the words, “he covets greedily” or “the person whether male or female desires, waits longingly, wishes, wants with a longing appetite and covetousness” “all the day long” which means “throughout the entire sunrise to sunset”. Solomon shared how the “slothful man” desires and wishes for a blessing throughout the “daytime” hours.

The verse continues, “but the righteous gives and spares not.” Solomon added the words, “but the righteous gives” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the people who are just, right, correct and lawful puts, sets, grants, provides, delivers up and produces” “and spares not” which means “and does not in any way withhold, restrain, keep in check and refrain”. Solomon said in contrast to the “greedy”, the person who is just, right and correct bestows and produces without restraint.

When we consider the words in this verse, we discover through Solomon the difference between a person who is a giver compared to a person who longingly covets throughout their day. God loves. God gives, and He wants us to be like Him. “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life” (See John 3:16), and when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to be “givers” and not “greedy” for our own gain all the day long.

Next time Solomon says, “the sacrifice of the wicked is abomination”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
