A Calf Made in Horeb - Psalms 106:19

In Psalms one hundred six the Psalmist said concerning some of the people of Israel who were wandering in the wilderness, “they envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron the saint of the LORD. The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram. And a fire was kindled in their company; the flame burned up the wicked”, and in chapter one hundred six and verse nineteen of Psalms the Psalmist shared how the people of Israel, “made a calf in Horeb” where we read,

They made a calf in Horeb, and worshiped the molten image.

The verse begins, They made a calf in Horeb, ... The Psalmist began with the words, “they made a calf” or “they, the people of Israel, formed, fashioned and produced a bull-calf” “in Horeb” which means “within Horeb whose name means desert and was another name for Mount Sinai from which God gave the law to Moses and the Israelites”. (See Exodus 32:4-8) The Psalmist referred to the time when the people of Israel formed and fashioned a “golden calf” while Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the ten commandments.

The verse continues,... and worshiped the molten image. The Psalmist added the words, “and worshiped” or “and bowed down to, prostrated themselves and made superior in homage” “the molten image” which means “the pouring, libation, cast and fusion of metal”. The Psalmist mentioned the way the people of Israel began to bow down and prostrated themselves before the golden calf which they formed.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how the Psalmist referred to the way the the people of Israel began to worship a “golden calf” in the wilderness. They became weary of waiting for Moses to return from Mount Sinai and convinced “Aaron” to make an idol or image that would represent their God. This was in direct opposition to Jehovah God Himself as no other gods were to be worshiped other than Him. God loves us, and all other gods are false idols. God desired to have personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus whom He sent into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and keep us from bowing down to false idols and gods that possess no power to deliver or save us for all eternity.

Next time the Psalmist shares how the people of Israel, “changed their glory into the similitude of an ox”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
