In Psalms one hundred five the Psalmist said Jehovah God, “called for a famine upon the land: he broke the whole staff of bread. He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant. Whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron. Until the time that his word came: the word of the LORD tried him. The king sent and loosed him; even the ruler of the people, and let him go free”, and in chapter one hundred five and verse twenty-one of Psalms the Psalmist shared how the king, “made him lord of his house” where we read,
He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance:
The verse begins, “He made him lord of his house, ...” The Psalmist began with the words, “he made him lord” or “He, the king or Pharaoh caused him, Joseph, to exist as master, superintendent of household affairs, governor and prince” “of his house” which means “pertaining to his, Pharaoh's, dwelling place, habitation and abode”. The Psalmist said the Pharaoh of Egypt caused Joseph to be overseer and governor over his household. (See Genesis 41:40-44)
The verse continues, “... and ruler of all his substance:” The Psalmist added the words, “and ruler” or “and one to exercise dominion” “of all his substance” which means “over each, every, the whole and everything within his, Pharaoh's, acquisitions, possessions, purchased property and wealth”. The Psalmist shared how Pharaoh caused Joseph to exercise dominion over his wealth and every possession that he owned.
When we think through the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist referred to the promotion of Joseph from a prisoner to the governor or “prime minister” over all of Egypt which was under Pharaoh's control. God caused this to save His people Israel, and He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins so that we may be forgiven and inherit eternal life with Him when we surrender our lives to Him. Joseph becomes a “type” of Jesus Christ whom God knew could rescue people from their slavery to sin, and like the Israelites who were to be set free by Joseph, God gave Jesus to release us from bondage when we believe and trust in Him.
Next time the Psalmist shares how the king made Joseph lord of his house, “to bind his princes at his pleasure”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
