In Psalms one hundred five the Psalmist said Jehovah God, “called for a famine upon the land: he broke the whole staff of bread. He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant. Whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron”, and in chapter one hundred five and verse nineteen of Psalms the Psalmist said, “ until the time that his word came” where we read,
Until the time that his word came: the word of the LORD tried him.
The verse begins, “Until the time that his word came:” The Psalmist began with the words, “until the time” or “up and even to the occurrence and occasion” “that his word came” which means “that his, Joseph's, speech, saying and utterance entered and was enumerated”. The Psalmist said Jehovah God continued in bonds and imprisonment till his speech entered into the ears of Pharaoh. (See Genesis 41:11-16)
The verse continues, “the word of the LORD tried him.” The Psalmist added the words, “the word of the LORD” or “the speech, utterance, and oracle belonging to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “tried him” which means “refined, tested and proved him, Joseph”. The Psalmist said Jehovah God tested and proved the character of Joseph while he was imprisoned and treated like a slave.
When we consider the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist referred to the delay in Jehovah God fulfilling His plan of the salvation of Israel through Joseph. God tested and proved Joseph while he was treated like a slave and prisoner, and this time of delay was used for God's eventual purpose in Joseph's life. God sent His only begotten Son Jesus into the world to be accused, beaten and sacrificed upon the cross for the sins of all mankind. His plan may have seemed tragic if it ended at Jesus' death on the cross, but God raised Jesus from the dead three days later so that all who believe and trust in Him as their “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and be allowed to live according to His purposes and plans for their lives. We are invited by God to have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and He will save us when we yield to Him because He was already tried and proven for us.
Next time the Psalmist shares how, “the king sent and loosed him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
