Israel Lusting Exceedingly - Psalms 106:14

In Psalms one hundred six the Psalmist said concerning the people of Israel who were wandering in the wilderness, “they soon forgot his works; they waited not for his counsel”, and in chapter one hundred six and verse fourteen of Psalms the Psalmist said the people of Israel, “lusted exceedingly in the wilderness” where we read,

But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert.

The verse begins, But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, ... The Psalmist began with the words, “but lusted exceedingly” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover greedily desired, craved and longingly wished” “in the wilderness” which means “within the desert place and uninhabited land”. The Psalmist referred to the way the people of Israel greedily craved and longingly wished for their own desires to be filled as the wandered in the desert place.

The verse goes on to say,... and tempted God in the desert. The Psalmist continued with the words, “and tempted God” or “and tested, tried and proved the Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God” “in the desert” which means “within the waste place, desolate place and solitary location”. The Psalmist said the people of Israel tried and tested the Divine judge Jehovah God within the desolate and waste place. (See Exodus 17:2 and Numbers 14:22)

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how the Psalmist said the people of Israel began to have passionate desires within the desert wilderness, and they began to test God while they wandered in the “desert”. Forgetting God's acts and deeds and beginning to desire passionately that which God has not seen fit to provide causes people to test and try Him. God wants people to trust Him, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross and be raised from the dead three days later so people would believe and trust in Him. When we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to trust Him rather than “test” Him when things are not going as we desire.

Next time Psalmist shares how Jehovah God, “gave them their request”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
