Changing God's Glory into a Calf - Psalms 106:20

In Psalms one hundred six the Psalmist said concerning the people of Israel who were wandering in the wilderness, “They made a calf in Horeb, and worshiped the molten image”, and in chapter one hundred six and verse twenty of Psalms the Psalmist shared how the people of Israel, “changed their glory into the similitude of an ox” where we read,

Thus they changed their glory into the similitude of an ox that eats grass.

The verse begins, Thus they changed their glory ... The Psalmist began with the words, “thus they changed” or “therefore, wherefore and these things being so they, the people of Israel, altered, exchanged and removed” “their glory” which means “their, the people of Israel's, honor, abundance and splendor” into the following. The Psalmist referred to how the people of Israel exchanged and removed their splendor and honor for the following.

The verse goes on to say,... into the similitude of an ox that eats grass. The Psalmist continued with the words, “into the similitude” or “into the likeness, patter, plan, form, construction or structure” “of an ox” which means “pertaining to a bull, ox or head of cattle that is used for plowing food for a sacrifice” “that eats grass” or “that consumes and devours herbage or green plants”. The Psalmist said the people of Israel fashioned an idol into an image that was like an ox or bull. (See Exodus 20:4-5)

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how the Psalmist referred to when the people of Israel gave “Aaron” their gold and he fashioned the metal into a calf. The people of Israel began to worship the golden calf as their god, and this was a total violation of God's law. God wants Himself to be the One and Only God we worship, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and keep us from any image, idol or other thing that may be fashioned to bow down to and worship.

Next time the Psalmist shares how the people of Israel, “forgot God their savior”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
