The Smiting of Vines and Fig Trees - Psalms 105:33

In Psalms one hundred five the Psalmist said Jehovah God, “sent Moses his servant; and Aaron whom he had chosen. They showed his signs among them, and wonders in the land of Ham. He sent darkness, and made it dark; and they rebelled not against his word. He turned their waters into blood, and slew their fish. Their land brought forth frogs in abundance, in the chambers of their kings. He spoke, and there came divers sorts of flies, and lice in all their coasts. He gave them hail for rain, and flaming fire in their land”, and in chapter one hundred five and verse thirty-three of Psalms the Psalmist shared how Jehovah God, “smote their vines also and their fig trees” where we read,

He smote their vines also and their fig trees; and broke the trees of their coasts.

The verse begins, He smote their vines also and their fig trees; The Psalmist began with the words, “He smote their vines also” or “He, Jehovah God, struck, hit, beat and slayed their, the people of Egypt's, twining vines especially the grape even so and indeed” “and their fig trees” which means “and their, the people of Egypt's, trees that bear the fig fruit”. The Psalmist shared when the hailstones with fire came upon the people of Egypt it struck their “vines” and “fig trees”. (See Exodus 9:23)

The verse continues, and broke the trees of their coasts.” The Psalmist added the words, “ and broke the trees” or “and crushed in pieces the timbers, stocks and stalks” “of their coasts” which means “belonging to their, the people of Egypt's, borders and enclosed boundaries”. The Psalmist referred to how the hailstones and fire crushed the trees within the borders of Egypt.

When we think through the words in this verse, we discover how the Psalmist referred to the way the plague of hailstones and fire destroyed the vines, fig trees and other trees within the borders of Egypt. The relentless stubbornness of Pharaoh continued to cost the people of Egypt, and they must have been horrified to watch their “vines, fig trees and other trees” be crushed into pieces. God's power cannot be denied, and when He brings judgment upon people, they cannot stop Him. His desire is to save people from the penalty of sins which is death, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and protect us from the eternal judgment that shall come upon those who refuse to receive Jesus as their “Savior and Lord”.

Next time the Psalmist shares how Jehovah God, “spoke, and the locusts came, and caterpillars”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
