In Psalms one hundred five the Psalmist said Jehovah God, “called for a famine upon the land: he broke the whole staff of bread. He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant. Whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron. Until the time that his word came: the word of the LORD tried him. The king sent and loosed him; even the ruler of the people, and let him go free. He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance. To bind his princes at his pleasure; and teach his senators wisdom”, and in chapter one hundred five and verse twenty-three of Psalms the Psalmist shared how, “Israel also came into Egypt” where we read,
Israel also came into Egypt; and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.
The verse begins, “Israel also came into Egypt;” The Psalmist began with the words, “Israel also came” or “Israel whose name means God prevails or governed by God and was the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob even so and indeed entered and gathered” “into Egypt” which means “in Egypt whose name means land of the copts and was a country at the northeastern section of Africa, adjacent to Palestine, and through which the Nile flows”. The Psalmist referred to how the people of the nation of “Israel” entered into the land of “Egypt” where Joseph was ruling. (See Genesis 46:2-7)
The verse continues, “and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.” The Psalmist added the words, “and Jacob sojourned” or “and Jacob whose name means heel-catcher or supplanter abode, dwelled and was inhabited” “in the land of Ham” which means “within the territory, region and country belonging to Ham whose name means hot and was the second son of Noah and the father of Canaan and of various peoples which were inhabitants of southern lands”. The Psalmist shared how the people within the nation of “Jacob” or “Israel” lived and dwelled within the country of Egypt that originated from Noah's son “Ham”.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist referred to the time when the people of “Israel” left the land of Canaan because of the famine and traveled to the country of “Egypt” where Joseph was now a ruler. God had a plan for the rescue of “Israel”, and He was fulfilling His promise to protect and provide for them as they entered into that land. God also desires to save us from the bondage of sin, and He sent His Son Jesus to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and make provisions for us all the days of our lives on earth and eternally in Heaven with Him.
Next time the Psalmist shares how Jehovah God, “increased his people greatly”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
