In Psalms one hundred five the Psalmist said Jehovah God told Jacob or Israel, “Unto you will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance. When they were but a few men in number; yes, very few, and strangers in it. When they went from one nation to another, from one kingdom to another people. He suffered no man to do them wrong: yes, he reproved kings for their sakes, saying, touch not my anointed, and do my prophets no harm”, and in chapter one hundred five and verse sixteen of Psalms the Psalmist shared how Jehovah God, “called a famine upon the land” where we read,
Moreover he called for a famine upon the land: he broke the whole staff of bread.
The verse begins, “Moreover he called for a famine upon the land:” The Psalmist began with the words, “moreover he called for” or “in addition and added to this he, Jehovah God, called, cried out, declared and proclaimed” “a famine” which means “a dearth, famishing and time of hunger” “upon the land” or “on the ground, country, territory, district and region”. (Genesis 47:13) The Psalmist referred to the way Jehovah God proclaimed a time of hunger and famishing within the “land of Canaan”.
The verse goes on to say, “he broke the whole staff of bread.” The Psalmist continued with the words, “he broke” or “he, Jehovah God, rendered violently, wrecked, crushed and tore in pieces” “the whole staff of bread” which means “each, all and every part of the grain, food and loaf”. The Psalmist shared how Jehovah God tore the loaf and grain within the land of Canaan for the people of Israel. (See Genesis 47:19)
When we consider the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist referred to the time of “famine” that went throughout the “land of Canaan” and God provided food for the people of Israel. God was the protection and provision for Israel, and when He was caring for them, not even a “famine” would destroy them. God's desire is to have this type of personal relationship with every person, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield ourselves to Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and provide for us according to His riches in glory. (See Philippians 4:19)
Next time the Psalmist shares how Jehovah God, “sent a man before them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
