A Cloud and Fire - Psalms 105:39

In Psalms one hundred five the Psalmist said Jehovah God delivered the people of Israel from Egypt and He, “ brought them forth also with silver and gold, and there was not one feeble person among their tribes. Egypt was glad when they departed: for the fear of them fell upon them”, and in chapter one hundred five and verse thirty-nine of Psalms the Psalmist shared how, “He spread a cloud for a covering” where we read,

He spread a cloud for a covering; and fire to give light in the night.

The verse begins, He spread a cloud for a covering; The Psalmist began with the words, “He spread a cloud” or “He, Jehovah God, scattered and dispersed a cloud in the sky” “for a covering” which means “to provide and furnish a screen, veil or curtain”. (See Exodus 13:21-22) The Psalmist referred to how Jehovah God provided a cloud in the daytime sky as a screen over the people of Israel as they traveled in the wilderness.

The verse continues, and fire unto give light in the night. The Psalmist added the words, “and fire” or “and fiery flames” “to give light” which means “to provide, furnish, grant and bestow shining, brightness and illumination” “in the night” or “within the dark or nighttime hours”. The Psalmist referred to the way Jehovah God provided “fiery fire” during the nighttime to provide illumination for the people of Israel as they traveled through the wilderness.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist mentioned the way Jehovah God gave the children of Israel a cloud covering within the daytime which world provide shade and coolness during the daytime hours, and He provided a “fiery fire” during the nighttime which would provide them with warmth and illumination. God loves the people of Israel, and He loves us as well. He provided His Son Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord” who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us provision in both day and night for whatever we need. (See Philippians 4:19)

Next time the Psalmist shares how, “the people asked, and he brought quails”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
