In Psalms one hundred five the Psalmist said Jehovah God, “called for a famine upon the land: he broke the whole staff of bread”, and in chapter one hundred five and verse seventeen of Psalms the Psalmist shared how Jehovah God, “sent a man before them” where we read,
He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant:
The verse begins, “He sent a man before them, ...” The Psalmist began with the words, “He sent a man” or “He, Jehovah God, dispatched and assigned a male human being” “before them” which means “previous to, in advance and in front of the people of Israel”. The Psalmist shared how Jehovah God dispatched a male human being in advance of the people of Israel when there was a famine in the “land of Canaan”.
The verse continues, “... even Joseph, who was sold for a servant:” The Psalmist added the words, “even Joseph” or “indeed Joseph whose name means Jehovah has added and was the eldest son of Jacob by Rachel”, “who was sold” which means “who, Joseph, was given over as merchandise” “for a servant” or “to be used as a bondman or man of servile condition”. (See Genesis 45:5-7) The Psalmist referred to “Joseph” who was given over as merchandise by his brothers to the Ishmaelites as a slave. (See Genesis 37:27-28)
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist referred to the time Jehovah God dispatched “Joseph” in advance of the people of Israel when the famine came into the land of Canaan. “Joseph” was sold to the Ishmaelites who sold him to Potiphar, and for “Joseph” it appeared that all was lost. However, God sent him to the land of Egypt to save the people of Israel. God loves Israel, and He provides for and protects them. They are His people, and His desire was to have them be the nation through whom the entire world would be blessed. God sent His Son Jesus, Israel's Messiah, into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and provide “salvation” for us in advance of our knowledge of needing it.
Next time the Psalmist shares about Joseph, “whose feet they hurt with fetters”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
