Glory to God's Name - Psalms 115:1

Psalms one hundred fifteen the Psalmist said, “not unto us, O LORD … unto your name give glory”, and in chapter one hundred fifteen and verse one of Psalms the Psalmist said completely,

Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto your name give glory,

for your mercy, and for your truth's sake.

The verse begins, “Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto your name give glory, ... The Psalmist began with the words, “not unto us” which means “in no way or manner toward us, the Psalmist and his people”, “O LORD” or “O Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”, “but unto your name” which means “nevertheless, notwithstanding, nonetheless and moreover toward your, Jehovah God's, reputation, fame and glory” “give glory” or “grant, provide and bestow honor, splendor, abundance, riches and dignity”. The Psalmist wanted Jehovah God to ascribe to Himself “honor, splendor and abundance” rather than to the Psalmist and his people.

The verse goes on to say, “... for your mercy, and for your truth's sake.” The Psalmist continued with the words, “for your mercy” or “on behalf of your, Jehovah God's, goodness, kindness and faithfulness”, “and for your truth's sake” which means “and on behalf of your, Jehovah God's, firmness, sureness and reliability”. The Psalmist said it was on behalf of Jehovah God's goodness, kindness, faithfulness and reliability that God should give His “name glory”.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist desired that Jehovah God ascribe to Himself “glory” rather than to him and his readers and listeners. Because Jehovah God is filled with goodness, kindness, faithfulness and reliability, He is the only One worthy to receive honor, splendor and “glory”. God loves people, and He wants us to live with Him forever. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Lord and Savior”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow us to join all believers in giving Him “glory, honor and praise” for all eternity.

Next time the Psalmist asks why the heathen say, “Where is now their God?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

The Rock into Standing Water - Psalms 114:8

In Psalms one hundred fourteen the Psalmist said, “Tremble, you earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob”, and in chapter one hundred fourteen and verse eight of Psalms the Psalmist said Jehovah God's presence, “turned the rock into a standing water” where we read,

Which turned the rock into a standing water, the flint into a fountain of waters.

The verse begins, Which turned the rock into a standing water, ... The Psalmist began with the words, “which turned the rock” which means “who overthrew, overturned, changed and transformed the cliff, rocky wall, block of stone and boulder” “into a standing water” or “into a troubled pool, muddy pond, swamp and marsh”. The Psalmist referred to how Jehovah God changed and transformed the rocky boulder into a troubled and muddy pool or swamp.

The verse continues, “... the flint into a fountain of waters.” The Psalmist added the words, “the flint” or “the hard flinty rock” “into a fountain” which means “into a spring, well and source” “of waters” or “pertaining to watercourses or floods”. The Psalmist said Jehovah God also turned the hardened flint rock into flowing watercourses or floods.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist continued to share about the ability of Jehovah God to alter any part of the earth He desires. He changes the rocky stones into troubled pools, and He alters the state of hard flinty rock into springs and wells. God is able to do whatever He wants with the surface of the earth, and because He wants us to live with Him forever, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and align us with Him as He does according to His will with the world.

Next time we begin a new chapter and see the Psalmist say, “Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto your name give glory”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Tremble at the Presence of the Lord - Psalms 114:7

In Psalms one hundred fourteen the Psalmist asked, “What ailed you, O you sea, that you fled? you Jordan, that you were driven back? You mountains, that you skipped like rams; and you little hills, like lambs?”, and in chapter one hundred fourteen and verse seven of Psalms the Psalmist said, “Tremble, you earth, at the presence of the Lord” where we read,

Tremble, you earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob;

The verse begins, Tremble, you earth, at the presence of the Lord, ... The Psalmist began with the words, “tremble, you earth” which means “twist, whirl, dance, writhe, fear and be in anguish country, region, territory and world”, “at the presence” or “in the face, front and countenance” “of the Lord” which means “belonging to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”. The Psalmist instructed the “world” to twist and writhe in fear before the countenance of Jehovah God.

The verse goes on to say, “... at the presence of the God of Jacob;” The Psalmist continued with the words, “at the presence” or “within the face, front and countenance” “of the God” which means “belonging to the Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God” “of Jacob” or “belonging to Jacob whose name means heel-catcher or supplanter and was son of Isaac, grandson of Abraham, and father of the twelve patriarchs of the tribes of Israel”. The Psalmist more specifically desired that the “earth” shake and quake in fear before the countenance of the Divine judge Jehovah God who belongs to “Jacob or Israel”.

When we think through the Psalmist's words in this verse, we see how he instructed the “world” to shake and writhe before the countenance of Jehovah God who was and is “Israel” or “Jacob's” Divine judge and Supreme God. God made the world and everything within it including people. He knows unless we have a “Savior” we will be forever separated from Him because we have all sinned. (See Romans 3:23) He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His assurance that we may be before Him in tranquility and calmness for all eternity.

Skipping Like Rams - Psalms 114:6

In Psalms one hundred fourteen the Psalmist asked, “What ailed you, O you sea, that you fled? you Jordan, that you were driven back?”, and in chapter one hundred fourteen and verse six of Psalms the Psalmist asked, “you mountains, that you skipped like rams” where we read,

You mountains, that you skipped like rams; and you little hills, like lambs?

The verse begins, You mountains, that you skipped like rams; The Psalmist began with the words, “you mountains” which means “you risings above the plains, hills and ranges of mountainous places”, “that you skipped like rams” or “so you, mountains, danced, leaped and sprung about similar to and in likeness to ram animals and strong supports, posts or chief pilasters”. The Psalmist questioned the cause for the “mountains” to dance and leap like supportive ram animals.

The verse continues, “and you little hills, like lambs?” The Psalmist added the words, “and you little hills” or “and you tiny and small risings above the plain”, “like lambs” or “similar and in likeness to small cattle known as sheep”? The Psalmist asked the reason for the small risings to be similar to small cattle known as “sheep”.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we discover that the Psalmist shared how the “mountains and little hills” were affected by Jehovah God when He made “Israel and Judah” His “dominion and sanctuary”. God oversees and is able to affect every area upon the earth because He created it. He loves the people within the world and desires to live with us forever. He knows sin separates us from a personal relationship with Him, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind so we can be forgiven and live eternally with Him. God loves us, and when we surrender to Jesus as our “Lord and Savior”, we will find Him to be greater than anywhere on the earth including the “mountains and little hills”.

What Ailed the Sea? - Psalms 114:5

In Psalms one hundred fourteen the Psalmist said, “when Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language, Judah was his sanctuary, and Israel his dominion. The sea saw it, and fled: Jordan was driven back. The mountains skipped like rams, and the little hills like lambs”, and in chapter one hundred fourteen and verse five of Psalms the Psalmist asked, “What ailed you, O you sea?” where we read,

What ailed you, O you sea, that you fled? you Jordan, that you were driven back?

The verse begins, What ailed you, O you sea, that you fled? The Psalmist began with the words, “what ailed you” which means “wherein, whereby and wherewith troubled, afflicted, pained, distressed and bothered you, the sea”, “O you sea” or “O you large body of water such as the Red, Dead and Mediterranean Seas”, “that you fled” which means “so you, the sea, escaped, took flight, departed and disappeared”? The Psalmist asked what troubled and pained the “sea” so that it took flight and departed.

The verse goes on to say, “you Jordan, that you were driven back?” The Psalmist continued with the words, “you Jordan” or “you, Jordon whose name means descender and was the river of Palestine running from the roots of Anti-Lebanon to the Dead Sea a distance of approximately two hundred miles or three hundred and twenty kilometers”, “that you were driven back” or “so you, the “sea”, turned to the rear or backwards”? The Psalmist questioned the reason that the “Jordan river” was turned backwards.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist questioned the reason that the troubled “sea” was put to flight, and he asked why the “Jordan river” was turned backwards. God caused them to move, and because He is Creator God, He is able to affect whatever earthly conditions He desires. God is all-powerful, and He loves people. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow us to watch Him work with the seas and rivers in accordance with His Divine purpose and will.

Mountains Skipping Like Rams - Psalms 114:4

In Psalms one hundred fourteen the Psalmist referred to, “when Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language. Judah was his sanctuary, and Israel his dominion. The sea saw it, and fled: Jordan was driven back”, and in chapter one hundred fourteen and verse four of Psalms the Psalmist said, “the mountains skipped like rams” where we read,

The mountains skipped like rams, and the little hills like lambs.

The verse begins, The mountains skipped like rams, ... The Psalmist began with the words, “the mountains” which means “the risings above the plains, hills and ranges of mountainous places” “skipped like rams” or “danced, leaped and sprung about similar to and in likeness to ram animals similar to strong supports, posts or chief pilasters”. The Psalmist said the “mountain ranges” danced and leaped similar to the “ram”.

The verse continues, “... and the little hills like lambs.” The Psalmist added the words, “and the little hills” or “and the tiny and small risings above the plain” “like lambs” or “similar and in likeness to small cattle known as sheep”. The Psalmist said the tiny risings above the plains were also “skipping” like the “lambs”.

When we think through the Psalmist's words in this verse, we see how the “mountains and hills” also responded to Jehovah God's actions with “Judah and Israel”. The entire world responds to Jehovah God when He takes action with His people Israel. God loves all people, and when we believe and trust in His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow us to to enjoy the response of the earth to His wonderful acts and deeds to the people He loves.

Next time the Psalmist asks, “What ailed you, O you sea?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
