Let Them Curse, But God Bless - Psalms 109:28

In Psalms one hundred nine David said, “Help me, O LORD my God: O save me according to your mercy. That they may know that this is your hand; that you, LORD, have done it”, and in chapter one hundred nine and verse twenty-eight of Psalms David said, “let them curse, but bless you” where we read,

Let them curse, but bless you: when they arise, let them be ashamed; but let your servant rejoice.

The verse begins, Let them curse, but bless you: when they arise, let them be ashamed;” David began with the words, “let them curse” or “allow and permit them, David's adversaries, be trifling, of little account, treated with contempt and dishonored”, “but bless you” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover congratulate, salute, adore and praise you, Jehovah God”: “when they arise” or “at the time and moment they, David's adversaries, get up, stand and come on the scene”, “let them be ashamed” which means “allow and permit them, David's adversaries, exist as disconcerted, disappointed, shamed and confounded”. David wanted Jehovah God to allow his adversaries to continue their contempt while Jehovah God saluted and adored, and at the time David's adversaries stood against him, they would be disappointed and confounded.

The verse goes on to say, “but let your servant rejoice.” David continued with the words, “but let” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover allow and permit” “your servant rejoice” which means “your, Jehovah God's, bondman, worshiper, man of servile condition and slave be glad, brightened up and gleeful”. David wanted Jehovah God to allow him as God's bondman and worshiper to be gleeful.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how David wanted his adversaries to continue with their contemptible behavior, but to allow him to be favored and adored. He wanted Jehovah God to embarrass his foes when they rose up against him and cause David to be gleeful and glad when He worked. God loved David, and He loves us. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we surrender our lives to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and make us “rejoice” while He contends with those who continue to “curse” and treat people with contempt.

Next time David says, “let my adversaries be clothed with shame”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
